Easy Campfire Recipes Even The Worst Cook Can Master

Simple campfire food

Let’s face it. When some of us go camping – especially the household cook – we want to make the experience as simple as possible… after all, it’s our holiday too. So it’s useful to have a few easy campfire recipes that get everyone involved, with no need for a Master Chef. Even the kids could help out if you bribed them enough!

Simple Chicken Satay Skewers With Campfire Chapatis And Salad

Chicken Satay

  • 4 chicken fillets or vegetarian substitute
  • 4 tbsp smooth peanut butter
  • Good glug of soy sauce
  • Pinch of chilli pepper
  • Fresh lime juice and coriander to sprinkle
  • Oil for frying

Mix the peanut butter, soy sauce and chilli (if you want it) in a bowl until smooth. Add the chicken strips or vegetarian substitute, mixing well to distribute the mixture. Add to wooden (pre-soaked) or metal skewers and cook for 10 minutes over a campfire or barbecue until cooked through.

Chapatis

  • 2 cups wholemeal or white plain flour
  • Pinch of salt

Take the above dry ingredients and mix in enough water to bring it together into a soft dough. Break this into smaller pieces and press flat into disc shapes. Lay flat over a campfire or barbecue until the edges start to turn golden, then turn over to cook the other side.

Salad

Get lots of lettuce, mix with chopped tomatoes, cucumber, sliced pepper and sprinkle with toasted pumpkin and sesame seeds.

Sausages With Gypsy Toast And Roasted Veg

Gypsy Toast

  • Slices of dry bread
  • Quarter of a cup of milk
  • Knob of butter
  • Chunk of grated cheese
  • 1-3 tsp horseradish sauce (to your own taste)
  • 1 Egg
  • Salt & pepper

Mix the wet ingredients and season well. Put some butter in a pan to melt while you soak each slice of bread in the mixture. Fry until golden on both sides. Add sausages and roasted vegetables that have been cooking separately over the fire.
